[edit] Got a problem or question about a game? Perhaps someone can offer some advice.

02/21/05

Well, my Dr. Who (which I hope will make a debut at the Showdown) is having fits when I try and use the coin door buttons. I know that it gets to the backbox, because if I ground one of the wires, it activates the button, but once soldered back onto the button, I get nothing.

Sounds like a bad button. Radio Shack should carry these. If you are here in Colorado Springs you should also be able to find replacement buttons at OEM Parts. -Jim 2/22/05

01/01/04 Happy New Year! I have a Totem that powers up, but cannot be played. There is no delay when you press the power on button underneath (seems like there is supposed to be a delay). The score panels light up with 0's, but you can't get a game to start. The numbers sort of vibrate and fade in and out. Any ideas to fix it?

Mike someone just posted on rec.games.pinball with a similar problem for their Genie, you might keep an eye on that thread......Dave

Hi Mike,

This could be lots of things. Has this game worked in recent memory and just died out of the blue or was it this way when you got it? Take a look at

and

Email me if you want and I can give you some more specific things to check.

OK, I will be first. Here are a couple of tips...

Keep your game clean. Every 100 plays or so your game will start showing dirt on the rubber and playfield itself. Spray "Simple Green" on a rag and wipe all the rubber rings, posts and everywhere you can reach on the playfield. You can get Simple Green at your local grocery store. Use some kind of wax on the playfield every time you clean it. Everyone has their own opinion on what type of wax to use but everyone agrees the games need to be cleaned and waxed regularly. We use "Johnson's Paste Wax". It comes in a yellow can and seems to work well. There are many speciality pinball waxes available and some automotive waxes work well also.

One more thing, if your balls are rusty, pitted and/or heavily scratched, REPLACE THEM. Rusty and pitted balls can cause a great deal of damage to your playfield over time. Replacing them regularly insures you won't have unnecessary wear and will usually improve game play as well. Dave should be able to fix you up with any number of pinballs you might need.

I will try to monitor this thread from time to time and will try to help when I can.

Johnsons Paste Wax available at Ace Hardware, $5.49. They're also a good source for misc hardware items, screws, etc used in pinball games.

I have a new to me MM that has a castle gate that sticks in the up position until the ball shakes it loose by striking the drawbridge. I dont see anything that is interfering with it. It moves up and down manually without a problem. Could there be something causing the hold in coil to keep voltage on it? Same game, drawbridge wont close all the way, stays open about 3/4". What is the best way to adjust this to close fully?

Thanks,

Roy

Hi Roy,

This still sounds like a mechanical problem. I would guess binding in the slides or maybe the gate is hitting something at the top. If the gate closes just by hitting something near it with the ball, there must not be any voltage still on it... Is the back of the plunger somehow getting stuck against the coil?

On the drawbridge, there are 2 switches that tell the game when the drawbridge is fully open and fully closed. Go into test mode and select the drawbridge test. This will cause the bridge to move up and down and you can see when the switches hit. Adjust accordingly.
